San Diego, May 3..."Henry Brandstetter, a homesteader, 52 years old, was shot and killed late today by a member of a sheriff's posse which had been pursuing the man for several hours following the murder of Brandstetter's wife in the little postoffice at Borrego Vally, in the mountains of this county, near Warner Springs early today. According to Sheriff Byers, Mrs Brandstetter left their ranch home Monday following a quarrel and had taken refuge with Mr & Mrs William Sharp, the latter postmaster at Borrego Valley. Brandstetter is said to have to have appealed to his wife to return but she refused. This morning, it is said, he made another attempt. When she again refused, Brandstetter shot her four times with a revolver, pressing the weapon against her heart for the final shot. The woman fell dead at his feet. Brandstetter fled to the hills but later returned, looked at the body of his wife, and then disappeared". (From the Los Angeles Times front page, May 4, 1922)
