Richard and Dwayne were very close as they grew up and Dwayne looked after Richard.
Richard was driving through Bedford, Iowa, in a car on his way back to 3C camp from home in Council Bluffs, when he heard about Pearl Harbor. He had been hitch-hiking back from leave.
Richard enlisted January 1943, U.S.Navy Construction Battalions. Promotions were Motor Machinist's Mate 3/C. He received his discharge March 1946.
