   General Notes:

In the 1860 census the surname was McHouver but in the 1870 census and after they went by the name of Houver. In one source it was shown as Hoover. His middle name "Mckendry" may have been his Mothers maiden name. William was a cabinet maker.
In 1860 they had a 21 year old girl living with them by the name of Lydia Sellers from Ohio, don't know if she is related or not, but shows she attended school in the last year.
1860 census age shows 25. 1870 census age shows 40.
William enlisted in the 18th Iowa Infantry Regiment, Union Army, on June 13, 1863. He mustered in and out(July 20, 1865) as a private.

Steele's Campaign against Camden March 22-May 15. Prairie D'Ann April 9-12. Moscow April 13. Poison Springs April 18. Jenkins' Ferry , Saline River, April 30. Garrison duty at Fort Smith till July, 1865. (4 Cos. at Van Buren February 26 to July 6, 1865.) Ordered to Little Rock and mustered out July 20, 1865.
Regiment lost during service 2 Officers and 33 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 131 Enlisted men by disease. Total 167.
