Homer enlisted in the 18th Iowa Infantry Reg., Company K, on July 22, 1862. Information from Ancestry.Com showed he was promoted to full 3rd Corpl on October 14, 1862, to full 2nd Corpl on February 1, 1863, to full Corpl on May 12, 1863, and to full Sergt on August 14, 1863.
